Electric motors offer numerous advantages compared to combustion engines. The Concept_One was designed from the ground-up to utilise those advantages and create a whole new breed – the supercar of the 21st century.
Rimac Automobili’s unique powertrain is divided into four sub-systems. Each system consists of a separate electric powertrain with an independent inverter, motor and gearbox for each wheel of the car. This engineering masterpiece enables us to control each wheel independently, hundreds of times each second, in both directions, delivering an unforgettable driving experience.
We have developed the world’s highest power density motor system to power each of the Concept_One’s four wheels individually. Instant response, more than 90% efficiency, full torque at zero speed, wide power-band and limitless lifetime are some of the advantages around which the Concept_One was designed from the ground-up.
Each of the four Concept_One’s motors is coupled to a proprietary gearbox system. While the front motors feature single-speed gearboxes, the rear motors carry something truly unique – a two-speed double-clutch gearbox on each side.
The Concept_One’s battery pack is designed to deliver 1MW of power during acceleration and to absorb 400 kW during braking. A unique liquid thermal management and low-resistance conducting system had to be developed in order to master this challenge. The result is a highly advanced high-performance battery pack that is designed for demanding track-use, high power delivery and safety.
Aesthetics is our scientific approach to moving emotions. The bodywork’s aerodynamics follow the simple rules of balanced efficiency. The Concept_One’s timeless design features elegant and emotional lines that are not just beautiful, but also functional. Each surface and air intake serve a delicately balanced purpose – performance and efficiency.
Lights are the eyes of a car, a mirror of the character that is woven through it. An orchestra of 58 high-power LEDs are carefully directed by bespoke Rimac Automobili ECU units. Each beautifully hand-crafted light is equipped with a unique ventilation system to insure a clear and sharp lens projection.
Monoblock 20-inch rims milled out of forged aluminium alloy embrace the carbon ceramic brake discs, 390 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear which are supported by a 400 kW strong regenerative braking system.
The Rimac factory is just a two-hour drive away from the small Croatian village of Smiljani - the place where one of modern histories greatest man was born - Nikola Tesla. The Concept_One’s body features a hint of its origins – the tie (originally called cravat) enhances the elegance and powerful stance of the Concept_One and serves as an air-intake for the rear cooling systems.
The Concept_One’s beautiful rear lights serve many purposes – including aerodynamics and cooling. Integrated tunnels lead airflows through the radiators of the rear cooling systems into the low-pressure field behind the car. The aerodynamically shaped lights work together with openings in the carbon-fibre bumper and rear diffusor as the Concept_One cuts through air at speed. Design follows function as the diffusor fins conceal the reverse and fog light.
Following the design language of the exterior, the interior incorporates the Rimac Automobili DNA. Hugging the body in bespoke leather trim, the seats position the driver low and close to the centre of gravity of the car, emphasising the chassis information that goes through the drivers lower back and into his arms.
With its electro-hydraulic steering system, the Concept_One stays true to a pure driving experience and motorsport heritage. This decision was made after several prototypes with electric systems were built but could not satisfy our requirements for steering feedback. The electro-hydraulic system works in perfect harmony with Torque Vectoring and provides a touch of classic sportscar feeling in a high-tech enviroment.
Hugging the body, the seats ensure the driver is in the centre of the action, getting the most of the information through his palms and lower back. Leather and Alcantara are carved carefully with the precisely designed stitching, emphasising the attention to detail of the Concept_One's interior.
All controls in the interior are beautifully crafted mechanisms similar to the world’s best watches, with hundreds of individual components, carved from solid blocks of metal. Those controls are the interface between the driver and the Concept_One’s super-brain to adjust all important vehicle-settings like Torque Vectoring and regenerative braking.
Excitement does have a sound. It is different. It is profound. And it takes full advantage of the Concept_One’s silent moves. Music of the pure motion opens the doors to a crystal, powerful sound of the audio system.
Created from a blank sheet of paper by Rimac Automobili, the Concept_One’s infotainment system features a new and intuitive design to show the telemetry data via graphs and graphics, the state of all of the car’s systems and numerous other functions.
The Concept_One features the M2M system that sends more than 500 information including the state of all of the systems, telemetry data and location to a cloud via 4G network. That data can be seen in real time or analysed later via mobile app or desktop computer application.
The ambitious goal we set ourselves was to produce as much as possible in-house. Painstaking attention to every detail requires high quality, which can best be maintained and controlled if the engineering and manufacturing teams are under the same roof.
Thousands of metal, electric and carbon fibre parts have to be manufactured, assembled and tested for each Concept_One. Even the tools, jigs and moulds are designed and produced by Rimac Automobili. Most of the parts start their lives as aluminium blocks or raw bare carbon fabrics which don't leave the Rimac facilities in Sveta Nedelja before they are assembled into cars.
